We are not a wedding magazine, but every other year we feature this topic because we are a lifestyle magazine and weddings are part of all of our lives in some way or another. When writer Natalie Nirk got wind of the wonderfully unique twists Tulsans are putting on this traditional occasion, we knew we had something special to share with you. Tulsa Lifestyle is all about being “inspired by community,” and the details and imagination behind the examples in our feature will are sure to inspire brides, grooms and anyone else planning a special event. We are also fortunate to have a great team, and many of our partners, friends, writers and photographers were excited to share interesting ideas on the topic, as well.

My own wedding was uncommon in its time, before destination weddings became a “thing.” Nineteen years ago I walked down a conch shell aisle and stood under a palm frond arch on a white-sand beach at the exact moment the sun set and the moon rose over the island of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. It was literally a “blue moon,” the second full moon in a month. I thought it would be fun to share one of my favorite places there, the Bitter End Yacht Club, as an idea for potential honeymooners.  Trust me, there is nothing bitter about the BEYC.

I leave you with these words I’ve been giving as an enclosure with engagement gifts for many years. (My own non-traditional twist to the experience).  It hangs on a tag off a bottle of great wine I give to the happy couple:

How Marriage Is Like Fine Wine:

Sometimes it takes a lot of stomping around to get to the good stuff…
It’s a long, involved process that takes a lot of work…
The process starts off with a party…
There are good years, and there are bad years…
When you find a name you like, you stick with it…
It’s wild and fruity in the early years; it’s slow and smooth in the later years…
When two good Houses come together, they can produce a great product…
Each one is unique…
You savor every moment…
The old cliche is true: it really does get better with time.
