13th Annual Don’t Bug Me Flu Prevention Campaign Kicks Off

Hillcrest HealthCare System and the Tulsa County Health Department kicked off the Don’t Bug Me program Nov. 1 at Hayward Smith Elementary in Owasso. The Don’t Bug Me program, now in its 13th year, is designed to teach healthy lifestyle habits to school age kids to help them avoid getting or spreading the flu or other illnesses.

Students loved the Don’t Bug Me-branded antennae and wore them throughout the presentation. Kevin Gross, Hillcrest HealthCare System chief executive officer, opened today’s program and introduced the Tulsa County Health Department’s “Professor Penelope IAK”. Professor Penelope provided an interactive program, engaging students through asking questions and demonstrating proper hand washing and sneeze covering techniques.

Community Food Bank of
Eastern Oklahoma

The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma became the first food bank in the nation to begin working with Growtainers®, a high-tech, container, hydroponic garden. These engineered and insulated shipping containers maintain the perfect controlled environment for the year-round growing of produce.

The project is the result of a grant from Morningcrest Healthcare Foundation.

According to Ryan Walker, COO of the Food Bank, “The typical yield for a single Growtainer® in a full year of production is about the same crop in a normal growing season on an acre parcel. Maturity for most of our crops will typically take 30-40 days. For lettuce, it is predicted that 40,000 heads could be grown in a year.”
