50 Shades of Masculine 7

Create a Space for the Man in Your Life

Needing a place for the man in your life to relax and enjoy his favorite things? Whether your idea of relaxing is a quiet spot overlooking the lake or lounging comfortably in front of a big screen, everyone needs a space to unwind.

Before moving forward with your transformation, create a checklist of what you would like to have in the space. Decide whether you are willing to rebuild the whole room or just revamp it.  A great place to start is trim detailing and paint. In this office, the homeowner wanted a timeless look that was modern but not contemporary.  We did classic, wide beams stained in rich ebony with a contrasting ceiling. The charcoal adds richness and depth against the lighter gray walls without making the room too dark.

A theatre room is a great place to watch the big game or movie with the family. Mixing colors and finishes can create a feminine/masculine space that everyone will enjoy.  In this south Tulsa home, the client wanted a grand theatre that was reminiscent of Old Hollywood glamour while not being too feminine.  The stained columns border the luxe, onyx velvet draped panels that are highlighted with wall torchieres. Fabric panels do double duty; they are stunning and dramatic while being a soft surface to absorb sound.

Within these spaces he will want to be surrounded by the things he loves, but she will want to hide the “junk” away. Cabinetry will hide games and blankets. Open shelving can display cigar boxes, sports memorabilia or his favorite drink. Distinctive displays like this custom wine holder is functional for bottle storage but is also a great art piece.

Dark, moody colors create a relaxing feeling but can also be cave like. Varying the intensity of dark tones will create a sophisticated space that is not gloomy.  Prefer brighter colors? Consider tones other than white. A light gray cabinet with creamy walls is light without being garish. Play off lighter colors with natural materials that add warmth; a metallic backsplash plays nicely with the wood grain granite. The stone and iron gate add warmth to this wine room surrounded by dramatic white marble flooring and paneling.
