Becoming One’s Best Self Through Fitness
“T here’s no place like home,” Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz said. Home is of course where the heart is; it’s the place we feel most comfortable. So during life, we are all always looking for homes away home where we can feel part of something and at ease. This is exactly the concept that Revved Fitness owners Kevin and Emily Wilson bring to their establishments.
The couple has spent years formulating a concept of community and family within the workout arena. After years in the physical fitness industry and owning gyms, they invested in the idea of bringing local people together to grow in the concept of helping others be their best self. This idea of working next to others and growing along-side others on their fitness journey has produced tremendous results, Kevin said.
“When Kevin and I came up with Revved Fitness, our idea was to bring everything we loved about our experiences into one place and leave out everything we disliked. We devised what is a group physical training facility where everyone who walks in goes through our programming. So, everyone who walks through our doors is never left behind,” Emily said. So what exactly is such a community and how does it work?
First off, Revved Fitness is a boutique type of business, meaning it focuses on unique aspects of an industry. Think yoga or pilates as examples of what is considered specialized workout facilities as opposed to a gym with a one size fits all mentality. Although the examples mentioned above are more heavily attended by women, Revved Fitness’ concept appeals to both genders.
“Revved Fitness is a high-intensity interval training concept where the client will burn between 500 and 1000 calories during the one-hour workout session,” Kevin said. He further explained that due to the method of the high-intensity sessions, clients will continue to burn calories at an accelerated rate for the following 36-48 hours after the completion of the session. The workout that keeps working long after you do, he added.
As for how this works, he explained the science of E.P.O.C. (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption). Essentially, the body uses more oxygen after exercise than before exercise, and we expend more calories during our recovery from exercise than we do before exercise. This recovery process requires energy, which is why we see an increase in calories expended post-exercise compared to pre-exercise. H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training) seems to elicit the greatest E.P.O.C. response. A general rule of thumb is that the higher the intensity (and the more the exercise disrupts our homeostasis), the greater the magnitude and duration of E.P.O.C. following exercise. This is the method Revved uses to achieve maximum results in minimal time through intense sessions
“The metabolism is revved up in other words,” Kevin said. He further explained that the HIIT sessions are done with low impact, meaning the smallest risk of injury with the highest possible results.
In addition to the sessions, the team members at Revved use body image scanning and other tools of modern science to allow their clients to see the actual results that they are achieving, Kevin added that they are the only facility which offers this. They also have each client wear heart rate monitors. This is then projected onto a screen allowing for the trainers to observe and tweak each workout for optimal efficiency and for the clients to actually see the calories they are burning.
The heart monitors serve multiple purposes though. Since these sessions are group sessions where clients workout next to each other, the personal trainers leading those groups can optimize each person’s session, which can be progressed or regressed by using all of the stats from the monitors to make sure clients are getting the most out of the sessions while still remaining within health limits of what their bodies can handle. In addition, it allows for the beginner to work out next to someone who is much more advanced in fitness. Kevin reiterated that these are group workouts with a personal trainer leading the sessions. As such, a community bond is created between the clients themselves and their trainer. In many ways, it’s like having one’s own cheerleading squad to help keep them focused and supported during their fitness journey.
“WE WORK TOWARD HELPING OUR CLIENTS REACH THEIR GOALS, WHETHER THOSE ARE PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL OR SPIRITUAL,” KEVIN SAID. WE APPROACH EACH CLIENT ON A PERSONAL LEVEL. WE USE A MASTER WORKOUT CONTAINING SEVEN DIFFERENT WORKOUTS WITHIN IT; ONE FOR EACH DAY OF THE WEEK. THESE ARE USED IN TWO-WEEK INTERVALS AND THEN A COMPLETELY NEW MASTER WORKOUT IS WRITTEN. THIS ALLOWS FOR FRESH CONCEPTS AND KEEPS CLIENTS’ ROUTINES FROM GROWING STALE.
“The advantage that Revved Fitness has over other fitness centers is that each client gets the personal trainer experience, but without the cost associated with actually hiring one. And this is in a community atmosphere where those helping you in the fitness journey actually care about the results of each client,” Emily said. In addition, they touch on many other aspects of their client’s lives ranging from nutrition, supplements and lowering stress levels.
“We’ve created something that we love and we hope that people will gravitate toward us,” Emily said.
Kevin and Emily opened their first Revved Fitness on Brookside in January of this year and have a new location opening in Broken Arrow this month. There is also a franchise location in South Tulsa operated by Adam and Breean Akins. Kevin explained that whichever location one chooses to utilize, they will find the same experience as they experience in their home location. All locations are connected with the same master workout sessions and so no matter which one a client visits, they will still feel right at home on their journey to becoming their best self.
Fitness is a journey. Whether one is traveling from Oz like Dorothy or across town to reach it, there is still no place like home and no other place like Revved to make you feel like you are there.
